Uterine fibroids of TCM perspective

In TCM, the uterus is considered a place where qi (vital energy) and blood circulate abundantly. Any disruption in the smooth circulation of qi and blood can lead to stagnation and the accumulation of blood stasis. Prolonged blood stasis can eventually lead to the formation of fibroids.

In the case of uterine fibroids, they are believed to form due to a combination of two main factors:

Qi stagnation: Negative emotions such as long-term anger, frustration, depression, and pent-up emotions can lead to liver qi stagnation, which in turn can result in blood stasis.

Cold in the body: Many young women pursue fashion and beauty in their clothing choices, often prioritizing style over warmth. They may also consume cold foods, use air conditioning in hot weather, and engage in activities that expose them to external cold. The combination of external and internal cold invades the body, leading to the stagnation of qi and blood. Stagnation can cause the accumulation of blood stasis, resulting in what TCM refers to as "cold causing constriction and blockage." During these conditions, the development of uterine fibroids becomes more likely. For example, due to blood coldness, blood circulation slows down, and during menstruation, if the uterine lining doesn't shed completely, it accumulates bit by bit, eventually forming a fibroid.

Important Note: Women who experience prolonged menstrual pain after childbirth should be cautious, as the likelihood of developing uterine fibroids in such cases is as high as 95%. The remaining 5% of women might experience anger during their menstrual period, especially in the first three days. If anger occurs during this time, when the new uterine lining is supposed to shed, it may become trapped in the uterine wall due to liver qi stagnation, leading to the formation of fibroids. Therefore, it's essential for women not to get angry during menstruation, as it can be detrimental to their health.

Treatment Approach:

The treatment for uterine fibroids in TCM follows a two-stage approach:

Stage 1: Promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis, softening and dispersing the masses, and unblocking qi and blood. In simpler terms, this stage aims to cure uterine fibroids and make them completely disappear without surgery. The herbal formula used for this stage is Guizhi Fuling Jiawei Decoction.

Stage 2: Nourishing qi and blood. By nourishing qi and blood, the function of the uterus can be restored and enhanced. Women with fertility needs can have a chance for normal fertility. The herbal formulas for this stage include Wenjing Decoction and Bazhen Decoction.
