6.Disease Prevention and Health Maintenance. Moxibustion can be used for disease prevention and health maintenance, promoting longevity. Modern clinical observations have found that frequent moxibustion on acupoints like Zusanli and Dazhui can stimulate the body's vitality, enhance resistance to diseases, and play a role in disease prevention and health maintenance.

Functions:

  • Warming and Dredging Meridians
  • Expelling Cold and Dispelling Cold
  • Disease Prevention and Health Maintenance
  • Strengthening Yang and Consolidating Prolapse
  • Strengthening the Spleen and Nourishing the Stomach
  • Resolving Stagnation and Dispelling Masses
  • Regulating Qi and Blood

Daily application:

1.Warming and Dredging Meridians: Moxibustion stimulates meridians with its warming effect, promoting the flow of qi and blood. It helps to clear meridians, remove blockages and stagnation of qi and blood, thus improving circulation, and alleviating pain and discomfort.Dysmenorrhea is often caused by cold or stagnation of menstrual blood. Moxibustion on acupoints like Zusanli and Guanyuan has the effect of warming and dispelling cold, and can be used as a common healthcare method for young women.

2.Expelling Cold and Dispelling Cold: The warm effect of moxibustion can dispel internal cold, especially effective in relieving symptoms such as pain and stiffness caused by invasion of cold and dampness. Moxibustion is particularly effective in alleviating joint pain and stiffness.

3.Disease Prevention and Health Maintenance: Through moxibustion, the body's immune system can be boosted, and overall constitution can be enhanced for disease prevention. In ancient Chinese medicine, the concept of preventing diseases in advance was emphasized. Apart from treatment, moxibustion also has the function of disease prevention and health maintenance. With its simplicity and noticeable effects, moxibustion is suitable as a method for strengthening the body and maintaining health.

4.Strengthening Yang and Consolidating Prolapse: Yang energy is a vital essence in the body. When yang energy is weak, yin energy becomes excessive. Moxibustion can expel cold and invigorate yang energy, making it suitable for patients with weak constitution and depleted yang energy. Apart from its warming effect, moxibustion can also have a consolidating effect. Moxibustion is effective in treating conditions where deficiency of qi may lead to organ prolapse, such as uterine prolapse, gastric prolapse, rectal prolapse, and visceral ptosis.

5.Strengthening the Spleen and Nourishing the Stomach: The warmth generated by moxibustion can warm the spleen and stomach, stimulate the secretion of digestive fluids, and enhance the functions of the spleen and stomach. This improves issues like indigestion and poor appetite. For elderly individuals with symptoms of cold in the stomach and abdominal discomfort, moxibustion on acupoints like Shenzhu, Zhongwan, and Qihai can help alleviate the symptoms.

6.Resolving Stagnation and Dispelling Masses: Stagnation includes stasis of qi, blood, and phlegm, affecting the circulation of meridians. Moxibustion helps resolve stagnation and dispel masses by promoting the circulation of meridians. Chinese medicine states "no circulation, pain will occur," and moxibustion is used to treat blood stasis related symptoms. For example, moxibustion on Shenshu for lower back pain or on acupoints like Jianyu, Jianliao, and Quchi for frozen shoulder can have positive effects with consistent treatment.

7.Regulating Qi and Blood: The application of moxibustion on meridians can regulate the balance of qi and blood, harmonizing the yin and yang in the body. It promotes overall balance of qi and blood, aiding in adjusting the body's functional state.

Moxibustion Contraindications:

Restricted Areas:

1.Moxibustion is not suitable for the facial area to prevent scarring and aesthetic issues.

2.Avoid moxibustion on major arteries, the heart area, veins, nipples, and genital areas.

Contraindicated Conditions:

1.Moxibustion primarily utilizes warm stimulation to treat ailments. Therefore, it's not advisable for conditions involving Yin deficiency, internal heat, or excess heat.

2.Additionally, moxibustion should not be performed on individuals with infectious diseases, high fever, unconsciousness, convulsions, extreme exhaustion, severe emaciation, or those in a critical condition.

Restricted Individuals:

1.Moxibustion should not be done on individuals who are fasting, full, intoxicated, fearful, angry, extremely fatigued, or heavily perspiring.

2.Pregnant and lactating women should avoid moxibustion.

Friendly reminder:

1.Moxibustion Timing: Generally, moxibustion is performed between 8 AM and 8 PM. Alternatively, it can be aligned with the twelve meridian hours according to the Chinese traditional time system, coordinated with the acupoints of the organs. The recommended duration for each moxibustion session is 10 to 20 minutes.

2.Hydration: After moxibustion, it's important to drink a glass of warm water to replenish the fluids lost through sweating.

3.Possible Adverse Reactions: Typically, there are no adverse reactions, but individual reactions can vary based on constitution and conditions. Initial moxibustion sessions might cause mild reactions like feverishness, fatigue, dry mouth, or general discomfort. These reactions are usually temporary and should not be a cause for concern. Continuing with moxibustion will alleviate these symptoms.

4.Patience is Key: Moxibustion is a gradual process and should not be rushed. Perform moxibustion at a fixed time every day. Each cycle lasts for 7 days. Generally, it requires at least 4 cycles or more to achieve therapeutic effects (actual required cycles may vary depending on the condition and constitution). For general health maintenance, it can be practiced long-term, contributing to overall well-being.
