Say Fatty Liver (Part 1)
What is Fatty Liver?
In a normal liver, there is a small amount of fat, accounting for about 3% to 5% of the liver's weight. The severity of fatty liver is categorized based on the percentage of fat cells in the liver:
More than 5% - Mild fatty liver
More than 10% - Moderate fatty liver
More than 25% - Severe fatty liver
Analysis of Fatty Liver in Traditional Chinese Medicine
Fatty liver is mainly characterized by clinical symptoms such as right hypochondriac pain, discomfort, and fatigue. In traditional Chinese medicine, it falls under categories like "liver depression," "hypochondriac pain," "accumulation," "phlegm turbidity," and "blood stasis." It is often caused by overconsumption of fatty and sweet foods, stagnation of liver qi, weakened spleen function, and the failure to transform dampness. Phlegm, dampness, turbidity, stasis, and accumulation gather in the liver. The disease primarily affects the liver but also involves the spleen and kidneys. The main pathological products include phlegm, dampness, and qi stagnation. The pattern is characterized by deficiency with excess.
Based on this, the treatment of fatty liver focuses on the liver, spleen, and kidneys. The treatment principles include invigorating the spleen and soothing the liver, eliminating dampness and resolving phlegm, and nourishing the liver and kidneys while preserving body fluids.
Three Treatment Principles
1.Soothe the liver, invigorate the spleen, and promote smooth qi circulation.
2.Eliminate dampness, resolve phlegm, activate blood circulation, and dissipate stasis.
3.Nourish the liver, strengthen the kidneys, and protect body fluids.
