Legend of Licorice

Once upon a time, in a remote mountain village, there was an herbalist who was always eager to treat people's illnesses. One day, the herbalist went out to treat a villager and hadn't returned home yet. However, many people seeking medical treatment arrived at his home. Seeing so many people anxiously waiting for her husband to treat them, the herbalist's wife thought to herself: "Treating people's illnesses is just about using those herbs, isn't it? Why don't I prepare some herbal bundles for these patients?"

She remembered there was a large pile of herbs in the kitchen. She picked up a piece and took a bite, finding it sweet and pleasant. So, she cut these sticks into small pieces, wrapped them in paper, and gave them to the patients seeking treatment.

After a few days, several recovered patients came to thank the herbalist in person, saying that after consuming the medicine he left, their illnesses improved. The herbalist was stunned by the news, but his wife knew the situation well. She quickly took him aside and quietly explained. Suddenly, he understood. The herbalist urgently inquired about the conditions of those recovered individuals and learned that they suffered from ailments like sore throat and swelling due to poisoning.

From then on, the herbalist began using this herb to treat conditions of sore throat and swelling due to poisoning. Because the herb tasted sweet, he named it "甘草" (Licorice) and has been using it ever since.
